Dorothy S Chatman

Obituary With a strong faith and peaceful spirit, Dorothy Setlington Chatman transitioned from earth to glory on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. Mrs. Chatman was born on April 15, 1924 to the late Samuel and Beatrice Setlington in Coving, VA. In 1943, she graduated from Watson High School. Upon graduation, Dorothy moved to the Washington metropolitan area to seek employment. She enjoyed a successful career at the Passport Office of the Department of Sate. She held that position for more than 30 years prior to her retirement in July 1992. Dorothy was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, James Preston Chatman, who preceded her in death. They enjoyed and cherished one another for 55 years. Their relationship was a very special one. You would often see Dorothy and her affectionate husband holding hands as they strolled to their various destinations. From this union were born two children: Barbara Chatman of New York, NY and James Chatman, Jr. of Washington, DC. Deaconess Chatman’s Christian journey began at an early age in Covington, VA and continued in Washington, DC at the Greater Faith Baptist Church. She was a faithful and dedicated member and served as a member of the Deaconess Ministry for more than 25 years. As a Deaconess, she had a quiet spirit and performed her duties with dignity. In addition, she was a member of the April Birthday Ministry. Dorothy, affectionately called “Dot” and “Chatty” by family and friends, was a soft-spoken gentle lady. She was an avid reader, and she also truly enjoyed working in her garden. She will be fondly remembered and missed. Dorothy leaves to treasure her memory, her daughter, Barbara, and son, James; grandsons, Michael James Chatman and Shawn Ward; great granddaughter, Breena Chatman; special friends through the years, Mrs. Mary T. Payne and Mr. Edward and Mrs. Nona Banks, other loving relatives, her church family and friends.
